Winter RVing in Your Toy Hauler

Share

One of the great things about a toy hauler is that it is not an RV for summer vacations only. When the snow flies, you can pack up and head for winter fun with your snowmobiles, snowboards, skis, and whatever other toys are appropriate for your winter wonderland getaway.

What to look for in winter RV camping

Many RV Campgrounds offer winter accommodations. Since you are in a toy hauler, you need to find places that have room for the big rigs. They should have wide roads, and pull-through sites that are at least 60 by 35 feet.

Check their hookups. If you are going skiing, you will want to keep warm when you come in off the slopes. You’ll need electric service, water, and sewer. WiFi and cable access may not be survival tools, but they are a plus for your off-slope hours.

Decide if you are going primarily for sport, resort facilities, or both.

If you want to travel with friends

If you are traveling with a group, there are RV park owners who have several parks where groups can stay together for fun in the snow at a discounted rate. There are RV parks, or portions of them for adults only if you’re hoping for a kid-free vacation. Maybe you’ll want a place near some great restaurants: skiing is great for working up an appetite. Take some time to plan together and decide what is important to your group before you make reservations.

Making your reservations

After you’ve researched the possibilities of winter RV accommodations, and looked into the recreational facilities, take out your calendar, and choose several possible dates. Some resorts fill up quickly, and some may have a limited number of suitable sites for the toy hauler-sized RVs. Make your reservations as early as you possibly can.

Getting ready

If you haven’t checked your recreational equipment since last spring, get it out to make sure it is ready and safe to use.

• Go through your outdoor clothing and air it out, and repair whatever is necessary. Do you need new boots? Socks? Don’t wait until the last minute.
• Have a mechanic check out your motorhome to make sure it is winter ready as well.
• Take a few practice drives to get the feel of driving your loaded vehicle in winter weather.
Go!
Give yourself plenty of time to get there safely, and enjoy your winter vacation!
